Just another day at Granoff: Jinku Kim ’15 AM, ’19 PhD, a computer, music, and multimedia artist, exhibited his dissertation project in Studio 1 this fall. The immersive installation, supported by the Brown Arts Initiative, synchronized music with a 180-degree video display, both based on the interactions of audio waveforms. Visitors patched in via hardwire to a live computer program, which responded to their movements through the space. “This aesthetic abstraction both moves toward and pushes away from how we normally define synesthesia, in which two senses such as hearing and sight form a single, hybridized sensory experience,” Kim says. The installation’s title is a nod to Haruki Murakami’s Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
