Back off, Bunny Hop At Camp Bruno in the early 1900s, the first day of the spring term was celebrated by the snake dance, a serpentine line of seniors in caps and gowns—hold the hop. “This term is the time for many seniors to make their work as light as possible and to thoroughly enjoy the remainder of their course,” the Brown Daily Herald said in 1902, when this photograph was taken. Spring Day exercises endured in various forms into the 1960s, often incorporating a note of humor, from witty speeches to “mascots” that referred to class jokes.
