I was sorry to see the note about the passing of Professor Emeritus Beverly Ridgely (“Obituaries,” May/June). I met him early in my freshman year. He and his wonderful wife Barbara held a dinner party for Baltimore freshmen; older students would talk about their experience, and in those early days when everything was new, it was such a kind gesture.

Love of lacrosse formed the basis for our friendship. For more than 30 years, while I lived in Providence, we watched and cheered on Brown’s team. I recently returned to Rhode Island and kept meaning to get over and visit him, but now have to live with the regret of not doing so. I will miss knowing that he was there, kind, welcoming and ready to talk about the quality of next year’s recruits.
