I was overjoyed to discover that Brown was offering classes to Rhode Island prisoners (“Classmates Behind Bars,” July/August). It is well established that participation in educational programs is one of the best predictors of which prisoners will succeed upon release.

Northwestern University, where I teach as an adjunct professor, has a similar program, but with two important differences. It offers full course credit to prisoners who complete the same quality of work that is done by outside students. Even more importantly, some classes are held inside the prison. This allows students from the campus and students from the prison to meet and discuss course materials face-to-face, enriching the discussions for all. I urge Brown to continue to build on its commendable start.
