Jack Brook’s wide-ranging article “Lit.” in the January-March ’21 issue interested me very much, partly for a personal reason. My brother served in the Korean War as a Marine artillery officer. Upon his return home, my brother, with a deliberation, gave up smoking. In Korea, he was not always at the front; for about six months he was regularly a forward observer. Back home he remembered the priority for supplies to the front: Number 1 was ammunition, Number 2 was cigarettes, with food Number 3. When he gave up smoking, he did not do it for health reasons but to be free of a dependence. Before I entered Pembroke in 1954, my brother advised me to take up the game of bridge and not to start smoking and my brother did not know our father had also given up smoking so as not to be dependent on it.
