I was quite bemused to read a story in the current issue of BAM about Jeffrey Nussbaum ’97 the speechwriter, pictured alongside my favorite POTUS sporting his trademark aviator sunglasses. I was bewildered by Nussbaum’s quote that “Speechwriting isn’t necessarily about swinging for the oratorical fences or writing about the platonic (sic) ideals of a great speech. It is, rather, working to help a speaker be their best, clearest self.” While this is Nussbaum’s stated objective, he has either chosen the wrong client or he has a long way to go to prove himself as a speech coach. Joe Biden’s speech skills are pathetically lacking; in truth I am always glued to the TV waiting expectantly for his next gaff. If this is an example of Biden’s “clearest self” then this nation, or more specifically, the Democrats, are in deep trouble.
