After receiving a bachelor of science in applied math, I spent 43 years of my working career as a healthcare actuary. In healthcare, mental health was generally an afterthought, if thought about at all. After retiring in 2015, I remained on two committees, one of which wrote a detailed article with the key takeaway that the healthcare industry needed to begin to do more research on these social determinants of health to better understand their impact on not only mental health, but the entire spectrum of physical health. It seems to me every Brown student should be required to take both Prof. Satlow’s and Prof. Brewer’s classes. Every person needs to develop mechanisms to recognize and unwind anxiety, plus recognizing there is “something beyond us” as early as possible will prepare everyone to achieve, if not THE good life, a perspective to work with others for a collective better life.
