Kudos to President Paxson and the Brown leadership for its forward approach to the assault on higher education, science, discovery, free thought, and free speech. And for asking the Brown community to step up and speak out and/or provide additional funds to make up for the cuts. As a former lobbyist for higher education, I urge the University to engage other friends, supporters, partners (Corporation members; well-connected donors; companies benefiting from Brown graduates and/or ideas; community leaders and individuals benefiting from engagement with the institution, etc.). These “third party allies” often can make a more convincing and seemingly less self-serving argument for the benefit and value of Brown’s contributions locally, regionally, nationally, and globally. Further, the outreach/communication efforts must focus on Brown’s positive impacts on the “everyday lives of everyday people” at whatever level. We all know it, but many (most) people do not see it or see the connection. Stay strong, Brown!
