Somehow I missed the obituary for Dr. Harold Ward. Harold was my independent major advisor and mentor at Brown as I pursued an environmental major when there was none, and no Center for Environmental Studies as such yet. (We did have a recycling center though.) He encouraged my passion for the environment and helped me find my way, blending courses in biology/ecology with social studies and fieldwork. After graduation, I kept in touch for a while but drifted away after moving to Seattle. I got back in touch when I returned for my niece’s graduation around 2000 and was thrilled to visit Harold and his wife. I will always remember his understated brilliance and kindness and broad view of the environment and world.
